Parenting Resources with Dr. Rene
About Dr. Rene
Country Day is pleased to offer the expertise of Dr. Rene Hackney as part of our Administrative Team. Rene serves as Director of Parent Education and teaches the Parent Child classes. She has taught at CDS, served on the CDS Board and her daughters attended Country Day. Her love of children led her to a BA in psychology at James Madison University, and then she earned a MA in school psychology and a PhD in developmental psychology from George Mason University. Rene gained valuable real-life and clinical experience interning in the Children’s National Medical Center’s Developmental Clinic, and working for Child Find in the public schools. In 2004, Rene created Parenting Playgroups' highly successful workshops for parents and programs for children. Rene’s practical and balanced approach helps parents learn about current options and best practices that lead to happy, healthy children. You may find more information about Parenting Playgroups events and read Dr. Rene's parenting blog on her website.
Parent Education & Workshops
In addition to teaching weekly Parent-Child classes, Dr. Rene is on hand as a parent resource. As a current CDS parent, we encourage you to contact Rene regarding questions or issues you may have regarding your child or a parenting issue. Please contact Rene via email or by calling the main office to schedule a time to talk or meet in her office.
She is also going to be leading a variety of Parent Workshops throughout the year. These workshops are open to CDS parents free of charge and will be held in room C203 unless otherwise indicated. We do ask that you please RSVP to Rene (firstname.lastname@example.org) so that we have an idea of how many people will be attending. If you do find yourself available at the last minute, being a drop-in without a RSVP is permissible. We hope that you will be able to attend of of Dr. Rene's workshops and take advantage of this valuable resource at CDS.
*Please note that in the event of inclement weather or power outage where the school is closed or afternoon classes are cancelled, all evening events are cancelled, as well.
CDS will offer several specially focused courses led by Dr. Rene throughout the school year. Dates, times and enrollment information can be found on the After Class Enrichment (ACE) page. These classes include:
Plan, Do, Review: Focus on Intentional and Sustained Play
This is a play-based program that helps children to slow down so they can better focus on the task at hand and extend their attention span. Activities focus on related skills such as paying attention to visual and auditory detail, expanding time on task, listening, following directions, increasing narrative skills, making choices and improving organizational skills, setting goals with follow through and sequencing.
Dynamics of Cooperative Play
This group is a fun, play-based class to introduce and review a wide range of social skills including entering ongoing play, carrying conversations, negotiating and better managing competition and teasing. Throughout the series children practice narrative skills, listening, following directions, goal setting and self-evaluation. Each class varies with puppet shows, role plays, movement games, art projects, story times, group and individual challenges.
