About Us

The Country Day School is a play-based, independent preschool and kindergarten serving children ages 18 months through 6 years old in McLean, Virginia.

Since 1964, we have provided a warm, safe, and nurturing environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover, ask questions, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Unlike traditional classrooms, our students spend the majority of their day outdoors learning through nature, imaginative play, and hands-on experiences across our nine unique playgrounds and expansive campus.

Our outdoor environment serves as an extension of the classroom, where children build foundational academic skills while developing creativity, confidence, problem-solving abilities, and meaningful connections with the natural world. Rooted in tradition yet inspired by innovation, our experienced teachers thoughtfully guide each child's learning, partnering closely with families to ensure every student feels supported, valued, and celebrated.
